The person to whom this blog is dedicated, was known in the virtual world knew as Alge. She chose it from a story called "Flowers for Algernon" by Daniel Keyes, which was about a mentally retarded man (Charly) and a rat* (Algernon) who both undergo an experimental brain surgery to become more intelligent. Although they indeed become more intelligent at first, after a while they both start to deteriorate. At the end of the book, even though he is regressing, Charly keeps his dignity and humanity and asks to put flowers on Algernon's grave.
The journey
Shortly after Alge passed away, a rat was found by M's father on a parking lot. The rat found a new forever home with him and was named Algernon by M. At the same time Mieke discovered Mookie's blog (through twitter) with Lippe, a stuffed chewbacca who was about to travel the world and after talking about it with Janneke and M, the idea for the journey of Algernon Rat was born.
